Prologue : The End

Eva and her brother, Gabriel at the Lovelace mansion.

Evangeline Lovelace (often shortened to Eva) was born on October 12th, 1848 to a wealthy family. The Lovelace family had gained their new found wealth in the railroad industry. Her younger brother, Gabriel, was born two years after she was. Eva and her brother were named after characters from the 1847 novel Evangeline, A Tale of Acadie, which was their mother’s favorite novel at the time.

Eva and Gabriel’s wealth isolated them from other children as they were growing up. The Lovelaces went from average hardworking townspeople to absurdly wealthy is only a few short years. Many people believed and stated their opinions that the Lovelaces had struck gold and in a sense, didn’t deserve their wealth.

This was confusing to Eva growing up, others hated her for her parents’ money and others attempted to be her friend solely because her family had the same money. She had trouble trusting people and their true intentions. All of her friendships were fairly formal and she didn’t feel very close to the people who called themselves her “friends”. Her only genuinely close friend was her brother Gabriel, who didn’t seem to have the trust issues that Eva had. Gabriel always seemed to be surrounded by people who liked him for his personality and not solely his money.

On September 28th of 1869, a group of still unknown individuals consisting of 3 men broke into the Lovelace mansion. Their intent seemed to be robbery, as numerous things were stolen. Eva was the only one to hear the rustling of the robbers, as she lived closest to the study, which was the room the assailants were able to break into.

Eva didn’t suspect the noise to be people who had broken into their home, and she hurried down to the room to see what the sound was. She assumed it was her father attempting to find a book for his usual late night reading.

But when she opened the door, she saw 3 men with potato sacks modified with eye and nose holes obscuring their faces. Eva froze a few seconds before letting out a scream, before she attempted to run out of the study door.

She only got inches outside the frame before two of the three men ran after her and dragged her struggling and panicked form back into the study. The third man pulled out a knife from the holster on his belt and frantically lounged it into her stomach.

Eva didn’t understand what happened at first, she felt no pain. She only felt the blood spewing out of her body and soaking into the floor for a few seconds before she felt more pain than she could possibly ever imagine.

At that point, she couldn’t scream, she couldn’t think, all she could do was watch the man come at her again with the knife and stab her. She winced at the pain and lose consciousness when he plunged the blade into her for the second time. She was aware that the last thing she ever was going to see was the man who murdered her.

Eva was stabbed 32 times that night, and by the 10th, she was long dead.

But her eternal slumber would be rudely interrupted not too long after.
